•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.••*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•

The South Korean rock band delighted Singapore fans with energetic performances before finishing off on a touching note.

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.••*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•

It’s hard to imagine that just five years ago, CNBLUE was a struggling young band trying to get their feet wet by playing on the streets and in small clubs in Japan.

That humble beginning is a stark contrast from their Can’t Stop in Singapore live gig last night, where the South Korean quartet performed in front of 7,000 screaming fans.

Three gigantic LCD screens flashed an elaborate clock counting down to the start of the concert. When it seemed time for the boys to emerge, all eyes were glued to the stage, waiting to find out what kind of flashy entrance they would make.

But the way Jung Yong Hwa, Lee Jong Hyun, Lee Jung Shin and Kang Min Hyuk arrived on the scene was somewhat like their group’s early days – simple and straightforward, but eye-catching and ultimately effective: they casually walked out from the back of the arena (flanked by security, of course) onto the platform. Well, flying in on wires or leaping out from below deck wouldn’t be very CNBLUE, would it?

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.••*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•

“Thank you for waiting for us; we’re very happy to see you again,” lead singer Yong Hwa crooned to the audience after the band finished rocking out to Time is Over, Diamond Girl and Intuition.
In the one year and a month since their last show here, CNBLUE had released their fifth mini-album Can’t Stop, which meant that Boice (the official fandom name) had many fresh live renditions to indulge in. Just like Jung Shin promised during our interview the day before, the band played five out of the record’s six songs, including Cold Love, Like a Child and the title track.
Older classics were certainly not forgotten. The cheering in the hall amplified tenfold when hot favourites like I’m a Loner and L.O.V.E Girl came on, with devotees eagerly singing along without missing a beat (by the way, Yong Hwa told us that the band loves it when that happens, especially in countries outside of Korea).

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.••*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•

Adding flavour to the already-stellar musical experience were the impressive stage effects. Pyrotechnics, lasers, confetti and coloured spotlights coordinated flawlessly with the beat and rhythm of each song, giving the eyes as much of a treat as the ears were getting (not that four good-looking boys passionately jamming their hearts out on stage wasn’t doing that already).
The evening ended on a more solemn note when Yong Hwa took some time to address the recent Sewol ferry accident. “Before our last song, I want to say something to thank you,” he said. “A few weeks ago, there was a tragedy in Korea, and many people there are grieving the loss. We saw the yellow ribbons on your wrist and we know what it means, so thank you. We hope our music becomes a light to them and to you.”
For those in the dark, the yellow ribbons are used to show condolences to the ferry victims and their families, and symbolises hope for more safe returns. A local CNBLUE fan club initiated the gesture by distributing the ribbons to concert attendees, who tied it around their left wrist.
With that, the band delved into the aptly named Love Light and retreated backstage, but not before bowing with gratitude at the end of the three extended stages and promising they’ll be back again.

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.••*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•

We sat down with the South Korean quartet to talk about their Singapore concert, dancing dreams and Parents’ Day plans.

The last time CNBLUE bassist and maknae (youngest member) Lee Jung Shin was in town, he reduced local reporters into a puddle of “awwws” when he shared about his close relationship with Jung Yong Hwa, the South Korean band’s leader and main vocalist.
But the twosome was anything but affectionate towards each other during our interview in a Valley Wing Suite at the Shangri-La Hotel yesterday afternoon – but don’t worry; things weren’t sour between them either.
It all started when we asked if the quartet, famed for their distinct indie rock sound, if they’d like to experiment with different music styles such as hip hop or techno.
Lead guitarist Lee Jong Hyun was telling us about how they’re already starting to try new things at the moment when Yong Hwa eagerly cut in, “Why don’t we try dance next time?”, and proceeded to demonstrate a stiff robot dance complete with mechanical sound effects (let’s just say CNBLUE is more known for chords than choreography).

This led us to ask the boys: ¿who’s the best dancer in the group?

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.••*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•

Without hesitation, both Jung Shin and Yong Hwa unabashedly raised their hands. Yong Hwa, upon noticing that his junior was vying for the self-imposed title of CNBLUE Dance King, immediately protested in English, “Hey. It’s me!”

Unmoved, Jung Shin stood his ground with a confident “No”, prompting Yong Hwa to play things a little more on the offensive: “I’m better than you.”

When Jung Shin gave up (guess this unofficially makes Yong Hwa CNBLUE’s best dancer), we moved on to finding out who was the worst among the bunch.

Poor Kang Min Hyuk was volunteered by Yong Hwa with a forced raised arm, but the drummer did not protest, explaining, “I’m not that flexible, but I’m good with rhythm.”

A different CNBLUE show from last year

Unfortunately, fans won’t get to see any of the members’ smooth – or not-so-smooth – moves at their Can’t Stop gig at the Singapore Indoor Stadium tonight. However, Jung Shin did promise a show that deviates from their last live performance here almost exactly a year ago.

“We’ll be playing a lot of songs from our latest album ‘Can’t Stop’, which has a very different sound from previous records,” he elaborated. “We also went through our first global tour so we hope we’ve grown a lot since then, and we want to show that side to our Singapore fans.”

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.••*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•

Besides gearing up to play for an arena full of screaming Boice (the fandom name), CNBLUEexpressed their interest in accomplishing some touristy activities during their stay on our sunny island.

“We want to go to the Marina Bay Sands swimming pool,” Yong Hwa revealed. “We always see it from afar when traveling around Singapore, but we’ve never actually had the chance to pay a visit.” Also on their dream itinerary is a fun-filled day at Universal Studios and a gorge-fest on chili and pepper crab.

Playing florist for Parents’ Day

While children in many parts of the world are preparing to celebrate Mother’s Day tomorrow, South Korea had their Parents’ Day on May 8. To commemorate the occasion, Jung Shin had a family photo shoot, while Jong Hyun and Yong Hwa sending loving text messages.

Min Hyuk, however, was what one here would label as “spoil market”. “I like flowers, so I bought carnations and statice and made a floral arrangement for them,” disclosed the budding florist. He even got Yong Hwa to help out (even though the gesture is “not his style”), and the leader was really impressed.

“Our drummer does flower arrangements,” he noted.

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.••*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•

Balancing music and dramas

Now that all four members have made formal ventures into acting, ¿has this negatively impacted their jam sessions?

“When we’re busy [with dramas] it’s a little hard to meet up for practice, but we make an effort to do it,” said Yong Hwa. Jong Hyun concurred, “Regardless of how tied up we are, we try to fit in as much practice time as we can.”

In addition to sharpening their musical skills in private, the gang noted the importance of engaging their audience, something they gradually improved in as time went by.

“When we debuted, we focused more on the technical aspects and being the best with our instruments, so we lacked communication with our audience,” Yong Hwa recalled. “But as we started to get more relaxed on stage, we got better at it. It really makes a difference in the atmosphere.”

Jung Shin: " Me encanta tomar fotos.

-Uweekly, one of the two main Chinese Entertainment Magazine released weekly in Singapore, and this is the first time CNBLUE is featured as coverstory with their photo on the cover of this magazine, issue 437 released on 21 April 2014

CNBLUE – Success is not by coincidence

With good-looking appearance and strong composing capabilities, Korean Rock Boy BandCNBLUE (Code Name Blue) is having their second concert in Singapore on 10th May 2014. BOICE all over the world are probably envious of Singapore BOICE. Unfortunately, however, stress is inevitable because of their fans’ expectation.

100% Concentration

Artistes with ambition continuously seek breakthrough, naturally, CNBLUE is no exception to that. Before the new album < Can’t Stop> was released, it was said that Leader Jung Yong Hwa once expressed that he would like to release one “full self-composed” album to showcase members’ attitude towards “unstoppable” musical ambitions.

“Music makes us playful and makes us feel freedom. When we are performing for our fans, we can feel the energy that they are transferring to us. In order to change our music style, we put in lots of efforts and try and to put in a whole new element in this album. Hence, we are looking forward to be able to showcase this new music for everyone live in our concert. ”

CNBLUE who is known for “100% concentration and engrossment”, is always a group that company is proud of. After watching the reality show <Cheongdamdong 111>, audience should have some impressions of the 4’s serious attitude (as compared to the deeper impression of their more playful and lively senior band FTISLAND).

Yong Hwa loves to shake hands with everyone and because of this; he was called “Mr. Congressman Yong Hwa”. Jung Shin, is the one with the ready smile and very warm, but when he was teaching his junior, he insisted that his junior should practice playing his instrument till he perfects it. Then, he could take a break. From the “Sparta” devil kind of training they had on their juniors, we could see from CNBLUE that there is no shortcut to success.

Under long term high stress situation

Perhaps because of their meticulous character, when the 4 members had their psychology test, they were diagnosed as “high risk”. The doctor feels that they have stress hidden inside and Jong Hyun directly admitted that he has always been trying to manage his stress, but once every year, he would breakdown and even fell seriously depressed. Yong Hwa expressed that he has insomnia problem and the doctor exclaimed that his stress is already very high.

From the analysis of Yong Hwa’s drawing, the doctor feels that this leader perhaps want to escape from reality or because he needs to deal with such reality hence, he feels stressed out. Even the gentle looking pro gamer Min Hyuk also mentioned that once he start to work, he feels very stressful.

Can’t leave music

No wonder in the email, when we asked what their other hobbies that would make them unstoppable, their answers could never leave…

“If we need to say something that makes us ‘unstoppable’, that is music. We 4 hope to compose even better music and will put in all our efforts to produce the best performance.”

“Beside music, our other hobbies are sport and fitness and watching movies. Ah, also Jung Shin is very interested in photography.”

Jung Shin: “I love taking photos. For last year’s world tour concert, I decided to bring along my camera so that I can take photos anytime, anywhere. I am very interested in photography and editing photos, whenever I have time, I will do all these. ”

Even when asked about their hobbies that are outside of music, their answers seem like can’t leave work. See, like CNBLUE members need to find a method to relax fully.

Release the real “charm”

Their management company has participated in a “reality variety” show recently. From this show known as <Cheongdamdong 111>, CNBLUE also revealed their special characteristics.

Earlier on, to match with the group name CNBLUE, they give themselves a terminology – Lee Jong Hyun represents Burning, Kang Min Hyuk represents Lovely, Lee Jung Shin represents Untouchable and Jung Yong Hwa represents Emotional.

However in the show, the company’s staff gave their real comments, that Lee Jong Hyun is “Busan Man”, though he has been staying in Seoul for years, but he will still talk in cute “Busan dialect” accidentally, making him vexed. Kang Min Hyuk is an “avid gamer”, and his looks is always praised as the representative of Pretty boy. Lee Jung Shin is indeed “Kamjongshin”, it means that he is rich in emotions and pay lots of attentions to fashion trends.

As for Jung Yong Hwa this “model student”, he is almost perfect and finding his mistake is so difficult.

Perhaps, some audience was surprised by these “other side” but it is not strange to members themselves. “Actually the 4 of us, as always we are so familiar with each other so there is no surprise at all. However from this show, we have some precious moments with other artistes in the same company.”

5 year changes

After debuting for 5 plus years, does every members see the growth or changes in one another?

“It feels that we did a lot of things, and seems like we had become more polished. Actually, the dreams we have before our debut is coming true one by one. When we held our first concert, we were very excited. Up next, we are going to make our other dreams come true! Everyone please give us lots of support!”
